How to drive the unpaved road to Bezbog Lake in Blagoevgrad

Bezbog is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 2.242m (7,355ft) above sea level, located in Blagoevgrad Province, also known as Pirin Macedonia, a province of Bulgaria.

Where is Bezbog Lake?

The lake is located in the southwestern part of the country, north-east of Peak Bezbog, above the town of Dobrinishte. Near the lake there’s a mountain refuge called Hizha Bezbog and a chairlift.

Is the road to Bezbog Lake unpaved?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved and rocky, covered with dwarf mountain pine. A 4x4 vehicle is required. It comprises very steep sections. The last part of the road is closed to private vehicles.

Is the road to Bezbog Lake dangerous in winters?

Set high in the Pirin Mountains, the road is totally impassable in winters. The nearby slopes are sometimes prone to avalanches; in 1971 an avalanche destroyed the first Bezbog refuge.
