The peak is located on the border between the Honduran department of Ocotepeque and the Chalatenango department of northwest El Salvador.
Why is Cerro El Pital famous?
Located within Reserva Biologica El Pital, the peak is the highest point in Salvadoran territory and the third from Honduras. Recognized as a key tourist attraction, the reserve is rich in biodiversity, playing host to endangered flora and fauna. The cloud forest has some of the rarest plants and animals in the country, including quetzals and other endangered species.
How long is the road to Cerro El Pital's Peak?
The road to the summit is totally unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle is required. Starting from San Ignacio, in the department of Chalatenango, El Salvador, the road to the summit is 12.9 km (8.01 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 1.705 meters. The average gradient is 13.21%.
