How to get by car to the scenic Mo La Pass
Mo La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5,024 m (16,482 ft) above sea level, located in the remote Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. It's one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Mo La Pass?
The peak is located in the Karnali Zone, in the north-western part of the country, near the Chinese border. At the summit, there are a few prayer flags.
Is Mo La Pass unpaved?
The road to the summit is totally unpaved and difficult. It comprises narrow parts, impassable for two average vehicles at the same time, steep parts (hitting a maximum gradient of 14%), dangerous drops, and many turns. One of the biggest challenges is altitude sickness. It is vital to acclimatize gradually and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
How long is Mo La Pass?
The road is 42 km (26 miles) long, running north–south from Tingjegaon to Chharka, and is the gate to the Charkha Valley. A 4x4 vehicle is required.
When can I drive to Mo La Pass?
Set high in the mountains, the best time to face the road is during the late spring and early autumn seasons. From late April to June and September to mid-November.
How to get to Mo La Pass?
Traveling to Dolpo requires special permits because it is a restricted area. These permits are issued by Nepal’s Department of Immigration and must be arranged through authorized local trekking agencies based in Nepal.
Is Mo La Pass worth the drive?
Isolated from modern development, Nepal’s Dolpo region has preserved centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist traditions and a way of life shaped by extreme conditions. The landscape is dramatic and varied, ranging from arid, desert-like valleys and deep gorges to lush forests, high passes, and snow-covered mountain peaks.
