Chhatang La is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 5,674 m (18,615 ft) above sea level, located on the Nepal-China border. It's one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Chhatang La?
The pass links the Mustang District in the Dhawalagiri Zone of northern Nepal and Saga County of the prefecture-level city of Xigazê in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China.
Why is there a road to Chhatang La?
The road to the summit along the Nepal-China border was constructed as a military road by the Chinese due to its strategic location. This road is strictly closed to civilians, and there is no corresponding road on the Nepali side, making access from Nepal impossible.
Can I drive to Chhatang La?
Due to its status as a military road on the Chinese side of the border, detailed information about this route is difficult to obtain. What is known is that the road is unpaved, has steep drops and narrow sections, and can only be navigated by 4x4 vehicles or military trucks.
How long is the road to Chhatang La?
Starting from Changguoxiang (in Saga County, Shigatse, Tibet), the road is 48.6 km (30.1 miles) long. At this elevation, it’s completely closed in winters.
