A very bumpy, grueling road to Öl Pass
Öl Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.105m (6,906ft) above the sea level, located in Khövsgöl aimag in Mongolia.
Nestled in the Ulaantaiga Bio Reserve, the road to the summit, also known as Olyin Pass, is totally unpaved dominated by dry short grassland. It’s called Bayanzurkh - Ulaan-Uul Road. 4x4 vehicle recommended. When the snow falls - which it does in the winter – things get tough and slippery.
Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: adverse conditions are common. The pass is 66.5 km (41.32 miles) long, running north-south from Tugul to Altraga. This road offers views that are especially scenic. The road is currently being used as a migration route by nomadic families; local families and commercial traffic also use it.
