Charyn Canyon
Located in the Almaty region of southern Kazakhstan, Charyn Canyon has been carved by the Charyn (Sharyn) River over millions of years.
Located in the heart of the Charyn Canyon National Park, and surrounded by a Martian landscape, the canyon is around 80km (50mi) long and, in places up to 300 meters deep.
The road through the canyon is narrow and gravel, with some sandy sections. 4x4 vehicle recommended. The area is freezing cold in the winter, and sizzling hot in summer. Sometimes there is also strong wind, which makes you feel like it’s middle of the winter.
