Driving the scenic Road 319 through Almass Pass

Almass Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2,360m (7,742ft) above sea level, located in northwestern Iran. Connecting the lush, green forests of Gilan with the rugged mountains of Ardabil, it is the centerpiece of the legendary Asalem-Khalkhal Road, widely considered the most beautiful driving route in the country.

A Road of Contrasts: Where is Almass Pass?

The pass straddles the boundary between the Gilan and Ardabil provinces. The 66km (41 miles) journey runs east-west from Asalem (Talesh County) to the village of Majareh (near Khalkhal). What makes this drive unique is the transition: you start at sea level in a humid, subtropical jungle and reach the alpine tundra of the Talesh Mountains in less than an hour.

⛰️ Almass Pass (Road 319) Info

Summit Elevation 2,360m (7,742ft)
Route Name Asalem-Khalkhal Road
No Gas Station 80 km stretch
Best Experience Caspian fog & lush forests

Is the road to Almass Pass difficult?

While Road 319 is totally paved, it is far from easy. It is a relentless sequence of hairpins and steep gradients. Due to the constant moisture from the Caspian Sea, the road is frequently covered in a thick, dramatic fog that can reduce visibility to near zero. If you are prone to motion sickness, the countless turns will be a challenge.

Survival Tips: Fuel and Accommodation

Preparation is key when crossing the Almass Pass. There is no gas station for 80 kilometers between the main towns, so ensure your tank is full before leaving Asalem or Khalkhal. Accommodation is limited; while you won't find multi-star hotels, there are charming local inns and wooden cabins (especially near the summit) that offer a more authentic experience than any luxury hotel.

Winter Hazards

Set high in the Talesh range, the road is extremely dangerous in winter. Heavy snowfalls often close the pass, and black ice is a constant threat. Even in late spring, the weather at the summit can be freezing while the valley below is in full summer bloom.
