A road to Daulat Beg Oldi, a high mountain military base
Daulat Beg Oldi is a military base at an elevation of 5.067m (16,624ft) above the sea level, located in northern India’s Jammu and Kashmir state. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
The road to the military base is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicles only. The area is totally closed to civilians. The base hosts the world’s highest active airstrip. There are high chances of getting affected by AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness).
Due to the high elevations and exposure, the road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Temperatures here in the winter are brutally cold. It plummets as low as -55 C in the winters. The weather deteriorates frequently with strong icy winds. 12km South (35.302019, 77.954907), a military facility sits at 5.523m (18,120ft) above the sea level.
