Kungzhag La, one of the World's highest motorable roads

Kungzhag La is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 5.780m (18,963ft) above the sea level, located on the Indian (Sikkim) and Chinese (Tibet) border. It’s one of the World's highest motorable roads.

The road to the summit, located on the Tibetan plateau, is unpaved. One mistake can have serious consequences. It’s called Gurudongmar road. Road conditions are always changing. The road is usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). Avoid committing your vehicle to what is in front of you until you are sure of what you are getting into because things could get worse. The surface is a little more than natural rocky mountain terrain and gets incredibly steep and inaccessible as you drive along. 4x4 vehicle with high clearance required. A traveler on this road must be experienced and completely devoted to safe, slow and obstacle-conscious driving to deter danger. Only highly experienced mountain drivers should attempt to drive up. Due to hazardous area (minefields) do not hike or ride outside of the dirt road. This is definitely not a Sunday drive. You are allowed to drive up it without a military convoy or special permits. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
