Lachulung La: enjoy a drive among the clouds

Lachulung La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.059m (16,598ft) above the sea level, located in the Himalayas, on the boundary between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir) in India.

Lachulung La

The pass, also known as Lāchālūng La or Lungalacha La, is traversed by the Leh-Manali highway. It is open for only about four and a half months in a year in summer between May or June. The pass is located 54 km (34 mi) from Sarchu and 24 km (15 mi) from Pang.

Due its unique location and the climb in elevation over thousands of feet, and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared. The road is visible from the narrow gap of the Lachulung Lungpa. While crossing the pass, the tourist buses and taxis take a halt here most of the times, to let the tourists admire the local natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. It is one of the favorite passes amongst the hikers as well as trekkers.
