217 Provincial Road

S217, a remote high mountain road in Tibet

S217 is a very remote high mountain road located in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, in southwestern China. The road is mostly paved running entirely above the 4.200m above the sea level.

217 Provincial Road is 546 km (339 miles) long running north-south from Garzêt o X219 Provincial Road, near Wangguotong. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. The road is often underwater and severely damaged by rain and landslides and can be closed anytime. The most challenging part of the road runs along the Yalong River. Expect a cliff road without protections and a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. The road tops out at 4.645m (15,239ft) above the sea level.
