Tiger Leaping Gorge

Driving through Tiger Leaping Gorge is not for the sissies

Located in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world.

The road running along this scenic canyon on the Jinsha River is called E Ring Road. Your wheels will be astounded at the wonderful views of the mountains spread out before you! They are terrible for drivers who are prone to vertigo. The road is a stretch of pavement (until recently a simple mule track) crossed by several waterfalls, and frequently beset by rockslides. Some portions of the road have been known to disappear into the river below.

The road is asphalted but includes steep inclines and waterfalls, through farmlands and shaded woods. The road encompasses miles of stunning views through twisty hair pin corners, high elevations and steep grades. Landslides frequently cause travel delays.
