The ice road is 614 metres long and 13 metres wide. Between 1965 and 1984 there was no cross-border contact and Chinese and Soviet soldiers guarded the riverbanks. Now it is a front line for trade. The road for 60-70 days and is made by ice-supported floating objects for the winter season, and can hold trucks of 40 tonnes or less. The floating part is made of nine converted feeder ships.
This way, during the long winter, the frozen river becomes an ice highway. Every year, the cargo and passenger flow on the road has been rising. The road is a solution to the limitation of tonnage of trucks moving on the frozen river and enhances safety and capacity for the transportation for both passenger and cargo in winter.
