How is the road from Kangbeicun to Zhangcun?
The route features more than 100 sharp hairpin turns as it climbs the mountain face. The surface is totally unpaved, with loose gravel and fine dust that offers very little grip. With a 10% gradient, the climb is a slow crawl where tires often spin out on the tightest corners. There are no guardrails, and the track is so narrow that larger trucks often have to perform three-point turns just to get around the hairpins. A high-clearance 4x4 is the only vehicle that can handle the deep ruts and the sharp stones.
What are the weather hazards on the road from Kangbeicun to Zhangcun near the Nepal border?
Set high in the Himalayas, the weather changes in minutes. Even in the middle of summer, a sudden snowstorm can turn the dirt track into a mud slide. Once the ground gets wet, the 100 hairpins become almost impassable as the tires gum up with frozen mud. The track is often blocked by rockfalls or washouts that nobody clears for weeks.
How to get ready to drive the road from Kangbeicun to Zhangcun?
If you have a breakdown or get stuck, there is no cell service and no recovery trucks; you are on your own for the entire 60 km stretch. You must carry at least two full-size spare tires and several cans of extra fuel. A shovel, sand ladders, and a tow strap are essential for clearing the path or getting out of a rut. Mechanical self-sufficiency is the only rule here: if the car stops, your survival depends on what you have in the back of the 4x4.
