How to drive the Old G214 to Baima Snow Mountain Pass in Yunnan?
Baima Snow Mountain Pass, also known as Baimang Shan Yakou, is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,363 meters (14,314 ft) above sea level in Deqen County, Yunnan.
Where is Baima Snow Mountain Pass located?
The pass is situated in the northwestern corner of Yunnan Province, within the Hengduan Mountains. It lies on the old section of the G214 National Highway, between the towns of Benzilan and Deqen. The area is part of the Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve.
Is the road to Baima Snow Mountain unpaved?
The road was originally paved with asphalt, but due to the lack of maintenance, the surface is now severely degraded. It is covered in cracks, potholes, and debris from constant rockfalls. Large sections of the tarmac have disappeared, leaving a high-vibration track of dirt and sharp stones. There are no guardrails on the most exposed bends, and the shoulders are often soft or crumbling.
How long is the road to Baima Snow Mountain?
The loop over the old summit is 29.2 kilometers (18.1 miles) long. While modern traffic now uses the tunnels, the former G214 National Highway remains as a loop that climbs up the Hengduan Mountains. This old track consists of relentless switchbacks on degraded asphalt. Since the opening of the Baimang Snow Mountain tunnels, this section is used almost exclusively by locals.
Is the road to Baima Snow Mountain open in winter?
The pass is frequently blocked by heavy snow and ice from late autumn until late spring. Even in summer, the weather at 4,400 meters is unpredictable, with sudden sleet or hidden ice in the shaded gullies. The road is essentially abandoned, so snow is not cleared regularly, and landslides can block the path for days.
