Driving the 60 hairpins of Dariga Pass in Qinghai
Dariga Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3,602m (11,817ft) above sea level, located in Xunhua Salar Autonomous County, within the Haidong Prefecture of China. Situated in the southeastern part of Qinghai province, this pass is a legendary section of the regional road network.
The pass, also known locally as Dalijia Yakou, is set within the majestic Qilian mountain range. This area is a cultural and geographical crossroads, located south of Lanzhou and marked by dramatic alpine meadows and rugged limestone peaks. For years, it was a vital link for travelers and trade, offering a high-altitude challenge that tested both brakes and engines in the heart of central China.

Is the road over Dariga Pass paved?
The road through the summit is totally paved with concrete. Known as the S202, the route is famous among driving enthusiasts for its extreme engineering. Due to its challenging nature, featuring more than 60 sharp hairpin turns and steep high-altitude sections, the main flow of traffic was recently diverted through the massive Dalijiashan Tunnel. However, the old mountain road remains open for those who prefer the spectacular views and the thrill of the original climb over the modern, underground alternative.
How long is the drive through Dariga Pass?
The entire mountain section spans 52 km (32.31 miles), running north-south from Qitaibao to Manisigouxiang. Traveling this route takes significantly longer than using the tunnel, but the reward is a breathtaking journey through the Qilian range. The road winds relentlessly up the mountain face, offering bird's-eye views of the valley floor below. Drivers should be prepared for sudden weather changes and thin air, as the pass remains one of the highest paved crossings in the Haidong region.
