Gya La Pass

The road to the summit is totally paved in very good conditions. It is called China National Highway 318, also known as China-Nepal Highway and the Friendship Highway. The road is long and arduous and crosses several mountain passes through remote areas, so you need to be prepared.

The pass is 20.6 km (33.15 miles) long, running east-west from Shigatse to Qumuzong Caguo. It’s mostly flat, without steep sections. Access to the pass is typically open all year round but short term closures are common in winter due to dangerous weather conditions.
