Do I need a 4x4 vehicle to drive to Orkyi La?

Located to the south of Pu Moyongcuo lake, near the Bhutanese border, the road to the summit is totally unpaved and pretty challenging. Attempting it in anything but a High-Clearance, preferably 4-wheel drive vehicle is a recipe for disaster. The road is totally impassable in winters. Altitude and extreme weather are always a factor.

How long is the road to Orkyi La?

Starting at Kangmar, the road to the summit is 74.8 km (46.47 miles) long. This road offers jaw-dropping views, unparalleled freedom, and lots of fresh air. Plan 4-5 hours to complete the remarkable drive without stops, although you may want to block out extra time to stop, take photos and explore the region it passes through.
