Hei Daban Pass: Conquering the 17% Unpaved Ramps near Qiyi Glacier
Hei Daban is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,364m (14,317ft) above sea level, located in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in China.
Where is Hei Daban Pass?
The pass is located to the north-east of Hala Lake, in Zhangye Prefecture of Gansu Province, in the north-central part of the country. The drive is very scenic, with sweeping views of Qiyi Glacier.
Is Hei Daban Pass unpaved?
The road to the summit is totally unpaved and not numbered. The road conditions demand caution, especially when tackling the ramps that hit a 17% maximum gradient. On this unpaved surface, drivers must use low gears to maintain traction, particularly near the top where loose rock is common. Attempting it in anything but a high-clearance, preferably 4-wheel drive vehicle is a recipe for disaster.
How long is Hei Daban Pass?
The road to the summit is very steep, hitting a 17% maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at S215 Road, the ascent is 13.0 km (8.07 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 931 meters. The average gradient is 7.16%.
How to drive the road to Hei Daban Pass in winter months?
Due to the proximity to Qiyi Glacier, rapid temperature drops and sudden changes in the road surface (e.g., mud from glacial melt) are a constant hazard. Be prepared for strong winds and extreme cold, even in summer.
