Set high in Guniu Mountain, the road to the palace is totally unpaved but navigable by most of the passenger vehicles. It’s a very challenging road, with 49 hairpin turns. It is usually blocked by a gate.

Starting at Dongchuan Wangjiaqing Village, the road is 5km (3.10 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,000 meters, and hits a 20% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The summit offers stunning views.
