What can you see from the Sala La summit?

The summit of Sala La offers a wide vantage point over the Tibetan Plateau wilderness. On clear days, the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Chola Mountains are visible to the south. The pass is often decorated with traditional prayer flags.

Is the road to Sala La paved?

The road to the summit is paved and wider than some other passes in the region. It’s called Provincial Road S217. The descent into Sêrxü County involves several long, sweeping curves. Drivers should be prepared for the isolation, as there are no services or help available between the distant settlements.

How dangerous is the road through Sala La in winters?

Do not attempt to cross the pass during severe winter storms, as the road surface can become dangerously slick with black ice. Sala La remains a serious drive. The constant exposure to high winds and sudden weather shifts are the main hazards. Storms can develop rapidly, bringing hail or snow even in the middle of summer.
