The road to Xia Quepu Lake is not for the faint of heart

Xia Quepu is a glacial lake at an elevation of 4.918m (16,135ft) above the sea level, located in Kangmar County of Xigazê in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The road to the lake is totally unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle is required. The area is pretty remote, so facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilets etc. are rare to find. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: adverse conditions are common.
The drive offers amazing scenery while passing the great Masang Kang peak. Starting at 204 Provincial Road (S204), the road is 29.3 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 647 m. It’s a pretty steep drive, hitting a 14% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps.
Past the lake, on the northern shore, the road runs into Bhutan, over a pass at 5.400m (17,716ft) above the sea level.
