How to drive the desolate Tasha Ancient Road

Located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, the Tasha ancient road is a very challenging drive.

Why is it called Tasha Ancient Road?

Tucked away in the Pamir Plateau, the road is named after a thousand-year-old trail winding from Taxian to Tashkurgan Canyon in Shache. It is a small branch of the Silk Road.

How long is the Tasha Ancient Road?

The road is 291 km (180 miles) long running west-east from Taskurgan county to Shache / Yarkand counties. It’s called X613 county road at the beginning and then it follows unnamed local roads.

Is the Tasha Ancient Road unpaved?

The road is mostly unpaved (260km). It’s a cliff road (sometimes into gorges) running along the Tashiku’er and Yarkand rivers. It’s very narrow in parts.

How remote is the Tasha Ancient Road?

Rockslides, landslides and avalanches are common. This ancient road has not been opened to the outside world for tourism, only a few tourists have come here. If you do choose this route please check up to date information. The road is desolate and lonely for hundreds of miles. The farther you go, the more deserted you are.
