Lungmar La

A very treacherous journey to Lungmar La

Lungmar La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.776m (18,950ft) above the sea level, located on the Chinese-Indian border. It's one of the highest motorable roads in the world.

It’s one of the highest mountain roads of the country. The road to the pass is extreme. It’s totally unpaved and impassable in winters. The surface is a little more than natural rocky mountain terrain and gets incredibly steep and inaccessible as you drive along. 4x4 vehicle with high clearance required.
The pass links Kamba County (a county of Xigazê in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China) and North Sikkim (a district of the Indian state of Sikkim). There is a road on both sides of the border but they don’t meet at the summit. Facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilets etc. are rare to find. If you do choose this route please check up to date information.
