Dare to drive the dangerous Bamtso La

Bamtso La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.465m (17,929ft) above the sea level, located on the Chinese-Indian border.

Bamtso La

Located north of Lake Gurudongmar, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s a military road. Expect extreme temperatures. Due to the high elevations and exposure, the road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Be prepared for the cold and wind. A special Army and Sikkim police/administration permit is required to visit the area. Located to the north of the Kangchengyao range, the summit is crowned with military facilities. The pass links North Sikkim (a district of the Indian state of Sikkim) and Kamba County (a county of Xigazê in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China). Facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilets etc. are rare to find.
