Tianlongshan Highway, the highway above the clouds
Dubbed as the highway above the clouds, the Tianlongshan Highway is a marvel of engineering located in Jinyuan District, in the prefecture-level city of Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, North China.
The road is totally paved and very scenic. It’s 30km (18.64 miles) long and features four viaducts and a tunnel. The construction of the road started on March 2018 and was opened to traffic on May 2019. Its elevation gain is 350 meters, from the beginning of the road until its end. It’s equivalent to a 116 floor building with a 3-meter story height.
The road tops out at 1.364m (4,475ft) above the sea level on Tianlong Mountain. The most iconic section of the road is a circular loop bridge. It’s a three-storey circular highway bridge standing 350 meters tall, similar to the scenic Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop Bridge in Japan. The bridge is described as a giant dragon hovering over the mountain. It's one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.
