4 Places to Put On Your Bucket List

Most people have a bucket list of overseas adventures, but there are a number of attractions closer to home that are worth exploring. If you are putting together your travel wish list, there are things you need to know to make your journey both safe and fun.

4 Places to Put On Your Bucket List

Here are some of our favorite destinations, plus tips on making your trip a success:

Route 66

Driving Route 66 is an experience you will never forget. As you make your way through eight states you will see why this iconic highway is so popular. A journey that is rich in history, it all begins in the windy city of Chicago and culminates in sunny Los Angeles.

Unlike some road trips, this isn't really the spontaneous type. Since you'll be on the road about three weeks, it's best to plan ahead and book accommodation in advance. For example, the historic Wigwam motel in Holbrook, Arizona is a sight to see itself, and the famed Aztec hotel in the foothills of L.A. is another popular choice.

In addition to lodging, consider your transportation options. A reliable vehicle is essential, and good auto insurance from a reputable company will ensure you will be able to get home safely if the unexpected happens.

The Florida Keys

For an island getaway, the Florida Keys are a must-visit. A 112 mile long chain of tropical islands, this unique destination is a little piece of paradise known for boating, fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. If you own your own boat, it would be best to have your boat properly outfitted for a better experience.

But beware: between June and November there can be hurricanes, so it is best to avoid visiting during this period if you can. While there, know that the roads can get busy and you should allow some time if you decide to drive from beach to beach.

The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is made up of unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms caused by the Colorado River. It spans 277 miles long and is worth seeing at least once in your lifetime. There are many ways to experience the National Park, including hiking tours, rafting, helicopter rides, airplanes, bike riding, and horseback riding.

The Grand Canyon is made up of different sections with East, West, North, South, and Antelope Canyons. You can finish your trip by stopping at Las Vegas for the bright lights and a show. When visiting the Grand Canyon, it will mostly be an outdoor adventure in a harsh climate. While the thought of falling is scary, the risk of heat stroke and dehydration is more likely. Ensure you have sun protection and keep hydrated by drinking water regularly.

Disneyland

Open since 1955, Disneyland is "The Happiest Place on Earth." It is known for its rides and attractions, and even grown-ups will feel like kids again as they explore this magical theme park. While Disneyland is a safe place and promoted as family-friendly, it can be extremely busy during peak periods and can require lots of physical exertion in the hot sun. Make sure your children know where to meet you if they get lost, who to ask for help, and have your phone number written down and kept in their pockets. Also remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring sun screen and drink lots of water!

Be Safe While Visiting Your Bucket List Destinations

Everyone should have a bucket list, but why not choose some destinations that are closer to home? When traveling, make sure you plan your itinerary, are protected against the weather, have the right insurance, and consider the safety of your children.
