Sandwich Harbour, a crazy rollercoaster 4x4 dune driving
Sandwich Harbour is a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, located on the Atlantic coast of Namibia.
Why is Sandwich Harbour famous?
Sandwich Harbour, sometimes called Sandwich Bay, is a lagoon with huge sand dunes (up to 100m-high) running straight into the ocean.
Where is Sandwich Harbour?
It’s situated at the Atlantic coast, 50 km south of Walvis Bay. Part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, it’s said to be the single most important coastal wetlands of Southern Africa.
Can I drive my vehicle on the road along Sandwich Harbour?
A 4x4 vehicle is required to complete the drive along the beach. Be ready for any type of weather driving between the crashing ocean and ancient sand dunes of the Namib. At high tide, this narrow strip of beach is submerged by the waves breaking against the dunes, making the bay inaccessible. It's pretty epic, but the drive will most certainly be stressful, so just be aware of that. The drive is truly epic and very scenic.
