Tizi n’Illisi: Can you drive the narrow R302 without safety barriers?

Tizi n’Illisi is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2,464m (8,083ft) in the Azilal Province of Morocco. The road crossing the summit is the R302. Although it was recently paved, the route remains a technical grind due to the extreme mountain terrain, narrow asphalt, and the total absence of guardrails over deep precipices.

Where is the Tizi n’Illisi road located?

The R302 runs for 54 km between Ait M'hamed and Zaouiat Ahansal. This stretch cuts through the heart of the High Atlas, an area where you won't find a single gas station or workshop. If the car stops, you are on your own. The weather at 2,464 meters is unpredictable; heat can punish the radiator in the morning, while snow can block the hairpins by evening.

Is the R302 over Tizi n’Illisi safe for large vehicles?

The new asphalt on the Tizi n’Illisi pass is narrow. In many sections, there isn't enough room for two 4x4s to pass each other, forcing one driver to back up near the cliff edge. The surface is often covered in sharp stones and gravel that have fallen from the slopes. These rocks can slice through a tire sidewall or make the wheels spin and lose grip on the steepest switchbacks.

How dangerous are the drops on the Tizi n’Illisi pass?

The biggest fear on the R302 is the lack of safety barriers. You drive for kilometers along ridges where the only thing between your tires and a 200-meter drop is a few centimeters of crumbling asphalt. In winter, black ice makes these unprotected edges a death trap. Any slide toward the precipice is impossible to correct if the tires lose traction on the frozen surface.

What should you check in your car before driving Tizi n’Illisi?

The 54 km climb to 2,464m will make your engine's cooling system work at its limit. You must verify that your radiator and hoses are in perfect shape to avoid boiling over in the thin air. Check your brake pads and fluid before starting; the descent toward Zaouiat Ahansal is a long, steep slope that will cook your brakes if you don't use the gearbox to slow down. Never enter this road without a full-sized spare tire and enough water for a potential breakdown in total isolation.
