Mohale Dam

A paved road to Mohale Dam in Lesotho

Mohale Dam is a rock-fill dam located in the Maseru district of Lesotho. The road to the dam is asphalted and includes 5 sharp hairpin switchbacks.

The road to reach the dam (part of the Lesotho Highlands water project) was built in spring 2002. It’s narrow in parts but totally paved. At 145 m, Mohale is the tallest rock-fill concrete-face rock-filled dam anywhere in Africa. An entire mountain was crushed and moved to build the rock wall.

Starting from the surfaced A3, the drive is 8km (4.97 mile) long. The dam is built across the Senqunyane River. Mohale offers a variety of activities such as boat cruise, guided tours pony trekking and hiking.
