The abundance of traditions can be experienced in their purest form, alongside numerous outdoor adventures. The capital city, Addis Ababa, has seen significant economic development, accompanied by a growing luxury holiday scene that attracts many visitors.

While not a traditional safari destination, Ethiopia offers excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, especially many endemic bird species and stunning national parks. It remains an underrated destination for African wildlife, making it a well-kept secret.

Though Africa has not been the most popular holiday destination in recent decades, Ethiopia’s developing economy, improving safety, and streamlined visa process provide many reasons to visit now.

Visa Situation

Obtaining visas for many countries can be complicated, with long waits, extensive documentation, and high costs. In 2017, the Ethiopian government introduced the Ethiopia Tourist Visa, which simplifies and speeds up the visa process. This visa is available to all nationalities, provided their passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

The application is quick and can be completed online in just a few minutes. Required information includes full names, address, date of birth, email, travel plans, and health details. Applicants usually receive approval within 24 hours, rarely taking more than 72 hours.

The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days, a generous duration that supports extended holidays and thorough exploration of the country. Applying online before traveling helps avoid long queues at borders or embassies.

Though the visa is valid for 90 days, it is a single-entry visa, meaning travelers cannot leave and re-enter Ethiopia multiple times within this period. However, it is easy to apply for a new visa if needed.

With only two visa-exempt countries, most travelers will need a visa, but nearly all nationalities are eligible.

Ethiopia’s visa process is straightforward, removing barriers to entry. The country offers affordably priced luxury accommodations and a vast array of cities and attractions. Highlights include the National Museum in Addis Ababa and historic churches in Lalibela, Tigray, and Gondar.
