Celendín-Yerbabuena Road: absolutely no room for mistakes

Carretera Celendín-Yerbabuena is a very scary winding mountain road located in the region of Cajamarca, in northern Peru. Hair raising stuff! There is absolutely no room for mistakes.

Carretera Celendín-Yerbabuena

The road is paved but extremely narrow. It’s 163 km long and links the towns of Celendín and Yerbabuena. The surface of the road is in really good condition but at times the road is so narrow, with a 1000m drop off on one side and a sheer cliff rising the other, that when you drive round the corners one of your back wheels would be half off the edge.

There are sheer drops virtually along the entire route and enough hairpins to make a whirling dervish dizzy. The road includes more than 500 turns. Your wheels will be astounded at the wonderful views of the mountains spread out before you! They are terrible for drivers who are prone to vertigo. In many places the road is bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.
