The road to the lake is extreme: gravel, narrow, and very muddy and slippery after rains. 4x4 recommended. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. The climb is simply terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. Most people feel altitude sickness at around 2,500-2,800 meters. A bridge crossing the lake, called Puente Upamayo, it's one of the scariest bridges of the world.
