Abra Loncopata: pure adventure

Abra Loncopata is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.100m (16,732ft) above the sea level, located in Arequipa region in southwestern Peru. The road features 20% gradient sections. It's one of the highest mountain roads of the country.

Located in the Reserva Cotahuasi, the road to the summit is totally unpaved amidst gorgeous scenery. It’s called AR-105. The drive is very steep and delightfully devoid of traffic. Due its unique location and the climb in elevation over thousands of feet, and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared. The road features 20% gradient sections, pretty hard at the end. Don’t forget water, food, extra fuel, a warm jacket, a good GPS and maps. The pass road is 128km (79.53 miles) long, running north-south from Road 111 to Puica.
