Laguna Verde de Azufral

Laguna Verde de Azufral is a high mountain volcanic lake at an elevation of 3.970m (13,025ft) above the sea level, located in the department of Nariño in southern Colombia.

The road to this dazzling, emerald green crater lake on the north side of the dormant Volcán Azufral, is gravel. Only 4x4. Very steep and narrow. The road gets worse progressively. At the end of the trail, there's a winding road where you get to a viewpoint at 4.000m from where you have a great view of the crater with the three laguna’s. Located within the Reserva Natural del Azufral, do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. It has a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards, and driving under these conditions, can be extremely challenging. Weather can change on a dime, temperatures can dramatically drop, and the winds can be fierce. Wear warm clothing, bring along a waterproof windbreaker and drinking water.
2019 Update: This is a strict nature reserve and nobody is anymore allowed to go there. Even not by walking. The closest you get to the volcano is 5 km.
