Y-620: the Wild Road to Laguna Parrillar

Y-620 (also known Camino a Reserva Laguna Parrillar) is a short unpaved mountain road, located in southern Chile's Magallanes and Antártica Chilena Region.

Y-620

The road is 21.7km (13.48 miles) long, running west-east from the paved Ruta 9 to Laguna Parrillar National Reserve. The reserve is named after its principal lake, Laguna Parrillar. This trail has seven stopping points where there are clearings suitable for picnics, and for trout fishing in the months of October to March each year. The Laguna Parrillar National Reserve was created in 1977. It has 18.414 hectares of area, and it was created to protect the hydrographic basin of Laguna Parrillar, the main water reserve of Punta Arenas.

It’s a graded dirt road that most passenger cars can handle in dry weather. Laguna Parrillar is completely frozen when winter comes because of its altitude and the low temperatures of the season. The ice, especially on its borders, sometimes is about 11 inches thick. In other sectors the snow reaches the 2 feet tall, all the rivers and lagoons in the reserve turn into ice. The lake is very beautiful and there is plenty of space for a picnic.
