BR-163 is a challenging Brazilian highway running through the heart of the Amazon Basin.

Why was BR-163 highway famous?

The road was famous in the past due to trucks being stuck in mud for days. Most parts of the road were muddy and impassable in the wet season. Lorries could be stuck for up to 10 days. This dusty and desolate road had the potential to be a very difficult track and at times impassable after wet weather, especially from December to June.

Is BR-163 highway paved now?

In 2021, the road was completely paved, and the round trip was reduced from 10 to 4 days. However, heavy trucks during periods of extremely wet weather will quickly deteriorate the new paved highway.

How long is BR-163 highway?

The road is 1,732km (1,076 miles) long, running from Cuiabá (the capital city of Mato Grosso state) to Santarém (the second largest city on the Amazon River after Manaus in the state of Pará).
