The section of the 024 Road from Huancavelica to Ayacucho in the Peruvian Andes is considered to be the longest stretch of road in the world continuously above 4,000 meters, between wind and snow, biting cold and chewing coca, thin air and thinner apprehensions.

BR-116 (Brazil)

BR-116 Highway links  Fortaleza, in the Ceará State and Jaguarão, in Rio Grande do Sul State, near the border of Uruguay. The road has been renamed by locals as ‘Rodovia da Morte’ (Highway of Death); and with the common fatalities and injuries along the cliff side road, it’s an apt name.

The Pan American Highways are also known as being extremely dangerous.  These roads run for nearly thirty thousand miles from Alaska to South America. The Guiness Book of World Records has named this road as the longest motorable road in the world as well.

The Darien Gap is the one break in the Pan-American Highway, meaning that overland travel across Central America is pretty much impossible. This 60 mile gap without roads has been successfully crossed a handful of times - usually by expeditions equipped with off-road vehicles and staffed by special forces types. Attempts to bridge the gap with a road have stalled, because of environmental protest or concern that an overland route may expose North America to foot and mouth disease from South American cattle.

The North Yungas Road is by far the most dangerous on the planet, so dangerous that it has earned the epithet of ‘Death Road’. The road covers a 70km stretch between La Paz and Coroico over a decent of 3,600m with ridiculously tight hairpins and narrow passages to navigate, all whilst trying to avoid a sheer 800m drop.
