Ultimate 4wd destination: Hardscrabble Mountain

Hardscrabble Mountain is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.261m (10,698ft) above the sea level, located in Eagle County, in the U.S. state of Colorado.

The road to the summit, located within the White River National Forest, is totally unpaved. It’s called Forest Road 413 (Hardscrabble Mountain Road). The drive offers beautiful views of the Sawatch and Gore Mountain Ranges. Accessibility to the summit is largely limited to the summer season.

The road is 33.31km (20.7 miles) long, running north-south from Brush Creek Road to Gypsum Creek Road. 4x4 vehicle required. The road is steep, hitting a 10% of gradient through some of the ramps. Wet conditions may make for tough driving along the muddy road.
