Altzomoni is a volcanic peak at an elevation of 4.027m (13,211ft) above the sea level, located in the State of Mexico. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
Set high in the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. Starting at Paso de Cortés, the road is 7 km (4.34 miles) long. The summit hosts a TV repeater, a mountain hut and Estación de Altura Altzomoni, a high-altitude weather station.
The peak is prone to heavy snowfalls and can be impassable after rains. A 4x4 vehicle is required. The road to the summit is very steep, hitting an 11% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The elevation gain is 346 meters and the average gradient is 4.94%.
