Set high in the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, the road to the hotel is mostly paved in a state of clear disrepair. Built in the 1970’s and inaugurated in 1973, the hotel was abandoned in 1994 due to the high activity levels of Popocatepetl volcano. It was a popular destination not only for climbers but also for Mexican tourists to see the volcano up close.

Starting at Paso de Cortés (Tlamacaxco), the road to the hotel is 4.7 km (2.92 miles) long. It’s a very steep drive, hitting a 7% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The elevation gain is 269 meters. The average gradient is 5.72%.
