Nicola Highway, a scenic drive along the Nicola River

Nicola Highway is a very scenic drive following the Nicola River in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada.

Nicola Highway

Located in the Nicola Valley, within the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the road (officially called Highway 8) is totally paved. It was built in 1953. This road has received significant upgrades in recent years, but seems to be somewhat of a hidden gem. The route is well maintained year-round. Snow tires are recommended during winter months.

The road is 65 km (40.38 miles) long, and runs from Lower Nicola, near Merritt (Highway 97C) to Spences Bridge (Highway 1) parallel to the Nicola River. There is very little traffic even when travelling in the middle of the day. On the rare occasion that you do encounter other vehicles they tend to be similarly minded enthusiast drivers or small packs of adrenalin hungry sport bike riders.
