The Deputy Madina Divisional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit of the Ghana Police Service, disclosed at the weekend that 20,000 Ghanaians perished through motor accidents from 2002 and 2011.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Charles Ahiamale who made the disclosure during a Road and Traffic public education asked drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful this year, in order to reduce the incidence.
He noted that regular testing of the road worthiness of vehicles at the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority and efforts of drivers to minimise their error of judgment whilst behind the wheels would help bring down the grim statistics.
The forum, which was organised by the Madina Atomic-Junction Drivers Union of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union, attracted about 500 taxi owners and drivers. ASP Ahiamale cautioned drivers against releasing their vehicles to people without driving licenses popularly called “spare drivers”. Mr Felix Otibah, Marketing Manager of Unique Life Insurance Company and Mr Lano Gordon, Accra Agency Manager of the company advised drivers to acquire valid insurance cover for their vehicles and patronise the informal pension scheme to secure their future.
