The Old Pali Road in Kailua (Hawaii) is haunted. The road has been recently replaced by Pali Highway. There are many supernatural stories attached to it. Maybe because of it's thick forest and hardly no streetlights that these eerie stories come about.

The highway was built on what was one of the most critical battles of the King Kamehameha's unification of the Hawaiian Islands. Nuuanu Pali is a cliff on part of Koohau Mountain is one of the windiest spots on Oahu. This is where in 1795 King Kamehameha I, forced thousands of his opponents to jump from the cliff to their deaths.

The most common haunting is that of a white silhouette and of ghostly soldiers leaping off the cliff.

Night Marchers are seen. And, if you do cross their path it is wise to go to the ground. Face down and keep quite until they leave.

There is a "Half-face" ghost of a little girl seen on one part of the road. What people witness is that she is very decomposed to the point that her eyes are protruding.

Dark dwarfs are seen darting across the road in several areas.

There another part of the highway that is called "Morgan's Corner". This is the area where most of all the apparitions are seen. One is particular is of a teenage girl that hung herself on the one giant tree that is there. Her name was Brittani Lochmann. Her head severed from her body. And, when buried it was not reattached. People believe she's searching for her head. People driving around there say they see her hanging on the tree. And they can hear mysterious sounds on their car roof tops.

But, the oddest story of all is about "pork". It's believed pork (is seen as Kinolau) is a form of the pig god. And car trouble is seen as Pele's way of keeping kampuaa from passing through the area. People still believe to this day that you cannot travel with pork in your car. They are willing to toss their sandwiches out the car window then have a problem with their cars. They believe you can cover the sandwich with a banana leaf to fool Pele. They even fear for their lives. One woman saw a woman sitting in the backseat of her car from her rear view mirror. Then she "felt" being choked from behind and almost hit a tree. She toss her sandwich she had out the window just in time.

Rumored to be possibly the spookiest street on O'ahu, the Old Pali Road runs underneath a tunnel of banyan trees, and at night is completely dark. It is famous for one of its more popular trees, which is located on a hairpin turn across from a small stream and shrubs. Long, dead branches hanging from the tree mark the infamous Morgan's Corner. Many people have reported seeing the apparition of a body hanging from the tree when driving by at night.

The most common story that accompanies this area involves a young couple. As the story goes, the couple was driving up Old pali Road on a rainy night and decided to park under a tree to make out. When the time passed midnight, the couple decided to head home, but the car wouldn't start. The boyfriend got out of the car to see what was wrong and checked under the hood. After looking at the engine and finding nothing wrong, he walked to the nearest gas station, leaving his girlfriend in the car and telling her to lock the doors and roll up the windows. She did and soon fell asleep.

Noises above the car soon woke her, but she assumed it was the branches of the banyan tree scraping the roof and drops of rain falling, so she fell back asleep. The next time she awoke, it was daylight, and she saw that she was surrounded by police cars. An officer told her to step out of the car and walk with him, making sure she wouldn't look back at the car. But against his warnings, she looked and saw her boyfriend hanging by his feet above the car. His body was sliced vertically down the torso. She then realized that it was his fingers scraping the roof of the car and his blood dripping down.

Sound like a movie that you may have seen? Well, that's only one legend circulating about the scary tree. Another story about the corner, however, is not so well-known, but it's true.

The area became known as "Morgan's Corner" in the 1920s when Dr. James Morgan built a villa there. Today, the houses that are hidden behind the turns just before and after the famous tree are known as "Morgan's Estate." Morgan had a neighbor when he lived on the estate by the name of Therese Wilder, and it is her ghost that is said to haunt Morgan's Corner today.

According to articles in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin of that year, two young men escaped from O'ahu prison were looking for food in the Nu'uanu area on March 17, 1948. James Majors, 21, and John Palakiko, 19, came across the residence of 68-year-old Wilder, where they smelled a hot meal and entered through her bedroom window. Hearing noises in the back of the house, Wilder went to investigate. When she stumbled across the two men, they beat her until she was unconscious, gagged her by wrapping a towel around her head and left her body on the bed. They stole food from the kitchen and ran.

Police arrested Palakiko again after he stole a car the next day. Majors ran for two days, and then, in a futile attempt to commit suicide, he drank iodine and was taken to Queen's Hospital. A gardener on Wilder's estate found her body four days later. Police questioned the two escapees about the murder, to which they confessed. They were later sentenced to death by hanging, which was never carried out. Palakiko died mysteriously, and no one ever heard or saw Majors again.
Some say that you can hear the moans of Wilder late at night when in the area.
