Driving through the scenic Afsluitdijk

Located in Northern Holland, the Afsluitdijk (A7 Road) is a major causeway and dike connecting the provinces of Friesland and North Holland.

The causeway is totally paved. It was constructed between 1927 and 1933. It’s 32 kilometres (20 mi) long with a width of 90 metres (300 ft) running from Zurich (in the community of Súdwest-Fryslân in the province of Friesland) and Den Oever, a village in the Dutch province of North Holland.

Part of the European E22 road, the causeway is so long that drivers can actually lose sight of land. There is a small structure with a restaurant in the middle. The drive is definitely worth it. With 300,000 visitors per year, the Afsluitdijk is one of Holland’s most popular water engineering constructions.
