A mountain road to the abandoned Station de Ski du Haut Asco

Station de Ski du Haut Asco is an abandoned ski resort at an elevation of 1.509m (4,950ft) above the sea level, located in the Haute-Corse department in the Corsica region, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s one of the highest roads of Corsica.

Station de Ski du Haut Asco

The lonely road to the old ski station is totally paved but narrow, steep, and winding. It’s called D147. The ski resort was permanently closed in 2019. A few shops (bar-hotel-restaurant) still sit at the end of the road.

Starting from Asco, the drive is 14.8 km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 839 meters. The average gradient is 5.66%. It’s a difficult road, with uncountable turns and twists. The road is prohibited to buses over 11 m long. It was partly constructed by the Foreign Legionnaires in the 1960's.
