Is the road to Starkenburger Hütte unpaved?

Set high in the Stubai Alps, the road to the summit is unpaved. It’s steep, narrow, and impassable in winter, becoming slippery after rains. The refuge was built in 1900 by the Starkenburg Section of the German Alpine Club above Neustift and opens from the beginning of June to mid-October (depending on weather conditions). Pay attention to the avalanche situation. The road is closed to private vehicles.

How long is the road to Starkenburger Hütte?

Starting from Neustift im Stubaital, the road to the hut is 12.6km (7.82 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,225m, and the average gradient is 9.72%. The location is amazing, and along the way, you’ll have a magnificent panoramic view of the Stubai mountains with their numerous 3,000-meter peaks.
