Aneto is the highest mountain in the Pyrenees and one of the most known peaks of Aragon, together with Monte Perdido and Vignemale. The height of the mountain is 3.404 m (11,168 ft) above sea level. Aneto is Spain's third highest mountain. It lies in the Spanish province of Huesca, the northernmost of all three Aragonese provinces. It forms the southernmost part of the Maladeta massif. It was also known as Pic de Néthou in French, though this is little-used as the mountain lies entirely within Spain.

The fog, blizzard, snow and ice are common factors in winter and spring. The autumn also can be bad, at least from October to December, with many rainfalls, hail and even snow. In summer be cautious with evening storms and always be informed at the hut or in Benasque until the climb. Summer is the season with more electric storms.

It’s impossible to arrive to the peak by car or bike, because it’s a high mountain and it needs to be climbed. But it’s possible to drive at an high elevation of 1.900m above sea level.

The access to this point, by a road called A-139, starts in Benasque and will take more than 20 minutes for a short section of 12km. Following this scary road, with cliffs on both sides, tunnels, a lake, the river Esera, and without guardrails in some points, it arrives, after 12km, to Llano del Hospital del Benasque, a hotel with a huge parking. At this point, at an elevation of 1.750m above sea level, and after a control access point, starts an asphalted road to Plan de la Resurta, at 1.900m, going through the Plan de Están (1.836m). This road can be impassable often every year, due the snow and the bad weather conditions. Plan de Resurta Plain is the end of the road and start of the mountain climb.

The road between Llano del Hospital and Plan de la Resurta has many restrictions. Is not permited to drive between both points from 8 AM to 8 PM in winter, and in summer the road is always closed. It’s only possible to be driven by private cars from May till July. There are regular buses from Benasque.

The valley of Benasque is the front door to the Natural Park of Posets-Maladeta, having numerous summits that surpass 3.000 meters and up to 13 glaciers in the groups of Posets, Perdiguero and Maladeta, they are most southern of Europe.
