Shaitan-Merdven: an old Roman military road to the summit

Shaitan-Merdven (Devil stairs) is a mountain pass at an elevation of 623m (2,043ft) above the sea level located in the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea, in Ukraine.

Set high in the Crimea Mountains, the road to the summit is unpaved. It’s an old Roman military road. It’s 4.8 miles long. This track can get very muddy and slippery after rain making it challenging to get through. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The drive is definitely worth it. A drive not to be missed! There are many excellent photo opportunities. Don't forget your camera with lots of film/memory, fully charged batteries and an empty memory card! The pass offers panoramic views of the coastline from Cape Sarych, the extreme southern point of the Crimea almost up to Cat Mount.
