Velické Pleso is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 1.670m (5,479ft) above the sea level, located in the Prešov Region of Slovakia.
Set high in the High Tatras Mountains, the road to the lake has been recently paved. It’s very narrow and steep. Starting from Gerlachov, the road is 9.2 km (5.71 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 881 meters. The average gradient is 9.5 %. The road is typically open all year round, but short term closures can be common in winter due to dangerous weather conditions.
Tucked away in the northern part of the country, within the Velická Valley, the area is very scenic and features stunning views. At the summit, there is a famous mountain hotel called Horský Hotel ‘Sliezsky dom’. It’s Slovakia’s highest-altitude mountain hotel.
